KIKUŌ YŪJI (Jiuta sōkyoku, Heike)

Reasons for award:
Kikuō Yūji has an established reputation for his technical mastery and expressive powers as a performer of the Jiuta and koto (sōkyoku) repertories, and in recent years his concerts in Japan and overseas along with his activities as a performer accompanying dance in the kamigata (Kansai) style have brought him further recognition. He studied with Kikuhara Kōji, successor to the late Living National Treasure Kikuhara Hatsuko, with whom he studied the classical Jiuta and koto repertories. In recent years he has also been engaging in serious study of the Heike-biwa, and the fruits of his study in this area are provoking much interest. He also provides instruction to Bunraku trainees in Jiuta, koto and kokyū performance, and is actively attempting to spread awareness and knowledge of these genres in schools.
